HISTORY OF GO
Although widely accepted as having been created around 2356 B.C. in China, a legend tells of an emperor conceiving the 'surrounding game' (Weiqi) to teach his son the way of strategy, as the son seemed to not be so keen on studying. After being introduced to Japan around 500 B.C., the game took off in popularity. During the Tokugawa period in Japan, the government funded 4 schools to teach what was now known in Japan as the game Igo. Playing Go became a profession and was held in high regard as one of the four scholarly arts, alongside calligraphy, painting, and playing an instrument. After Japan entered the world stage during WWII, Go became known worldwide.
